Argentina became the first G20 country to offer citizenship in exchange for investment. From USD 350,000 you get an Argentine passport with visa-free access to 170+ countries. Everything you need to know.
Argentina Opens Its Doors to Global Investors
On October 2, 2026, during Argentina Week in Paris, President Javier Milei's government officially launched the Citizenship by Investment Program. Argentina became the first G20 country to offer citizenship and a passport in exchange for a financial contribution.
How Much Does It Cost
Two routes are available:
Family members: spouse USD 100,000, children 18-25 USD 100,000 each, children under 18 USD 25,000 each. A typical family of four can access the program for USD 500,000 total.
What You Get
Full citizenship and Argentine passport with visa-free access to 170+ countries including the EU (Schengen), UK, Japan, Russia, and China.
Key benefit for US applicants: The Argentine passport qualifies holders for the US E-2 Investor Visa, renewable indefinitely. This is a strategic tool for nationals of countries without an E-2 treaty with the US.
No Automatic Tax Residency
Law 27.802 establishes that citizenship by investment does not create automatic tax residency in Argentina. Investors can hold the passport without paying Argentine taxes on global income, as long as they don't spend 183+ days per year in the country.
The Process
1. Eligibility assessment and source of funds verification
2. Formal application to the Citizenship by Investment Agency
3. Due diligence by six government agencies (OCDE/FATF standards)
4. Resolution within 30 business days
5. Citizenship granted and passport issued
Current Status
As of October 2026, the program has been announced but is not yet accepting applications. Expected to open by late 2026 or early 2027.
Legal note: The underlying decree (DNU 366/2025) was declared unconstitutional by a federal court in June 2026. The government has appealed to the Supreme Court, and the ruling is pending.
Comparison with Other Programs
Argentina offers the strongest combination: Schengen access, E-2 eligibility, and G20 membership.
What This Means for Argentine Real Estate
While the contribution goes to the National Treasury, the program introduces thousands of international investors to Argentina, many of whom will diversify into local property. Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Mendoza, and Bariloche are best positioned to capture this capital flow.
